TONGA & ENGLAND
Just like England, Tonga has a ruling King & Queen as well as its very own ancient megalithic structure shrouded in mystery.
3 huge 40-ton coral limestone slabs make up HA'AMONGA 'A MAUI. Like Stonehenge, Ha'amonga has astronomical significance too, telling the position of the sunrise at solstices & equinoxes.
Tonga never became a British colony so still have a reigning monarch to this day. The ROYAL PALACE is the official residence of the King of Tonga. A tortoise given to the Tongan royal family by Captain Cook, lived in the palace for nearly two centuries!
TONGA & EGYPT
The ANCIENT TERRACED TOMBS have often been compared to the ancient wonder of the Pyramids in Egypt.
3000 years ago, the ancient Tongan's constructed this enormous tomb in a similar way that the Egyptians did.
With little evidence of any mechanical tools being available at the time, the corners of the hard coral slabs used to construct the tombs have been neatly joined, like pieces of timber!
Tentatively listed with UNESCO as a World Heritage site, this is one of the most important historical sites in Polynesia.
TONGA & BAHAMAS
The FISHING PIGS OF TONGA are one of the strangest tourist attractions of all.
Just like the Bahamas, Tonga has its very own beach babes & although the pigs don't swim, they have learned to forage at low tide for crabs, shellfish, & fish trapped in rock pools.
It's such a sight to see pigs wading around in the ocean with their snouts underwater hunting for a meal.
The fishing pigs are favourites with the locals for their naturally salty flavour & can be found on the mainland of Tongatapu at low tide.
TONGA & IRELAND
Eua’s dramatic cliffs descend through a lush rainforest to the ocean below.
Much like the Cliffs of Moher, the CLIFFS IN EUA have staggeringly beautiful views from the top.
The island is 40 million years old & one of the oldest in the entire South Pacific. Just east of the island is the Tonga trench, the second deepest bit of water in the world. The entire island was raised out of the ocean by the trench leaving hundreds of coral caves and holes, many that have yet to be explored.
TONGA & ITALY
Limestone eroded away for centuries, creating the most beautiful cave in the South Pacific, SWALLOWS CAVE.
Unlike the Blue Grotto this place is not over-run with tourists & a cathedral of cascading light allows for stunning photo opportunities amongst the schools of baitfish.
A 10-metre-high entrance point allows for a leisurely swim into the cave. If you take your time exploring, you can find inscriptions in the wall dating back to the late 1800's.
TONGA & MOZAMBIQUE
Tongs is one of the few countries in the world where you can get up close & personal SWIMMING WITH HUMPBACK WHALES.
Adventure travellers who have already experienced swimming with Whale Sharks & are looking for their next big rush can try swimming with Humpback Whales in Tonga.
Experienced local guides assess the whales' willingness to engage with swimmers before taking small groups into the water. The Whales have their holiday in Tonga between July & October, chilling out in the tropical warm waters, making love & having babies before they head back home.
TONGA & MEXICO
There is something mystical about entering an ancient cave & finding a hidden crystal clear, freshwater pool.
Mexico is known for its Cenotes but Tonga has its very own amazing ANAHULU, an 8m deep crystal-clear cave pool & you will awe in its vastness.
Located on a great beach, the entry is a small opening in the rocks but opens to a huge cathedral like ceiling full of stalactites and stalagmites.
TONGA & FRANCE
OK so this one is just for a laugh but that's because there is nothing quite like the 3 HEADED COCONUT TREE.
In case you didn't know, coconut trees are only meant to have 1 head and this freak of nature is one of the rarest coconut trees in the world.
There is no need to travel all the way to Paris to stare up at the EIFFEL TOWER when you can marvel at this towering coconut tree. LOL stay with me.
TONGA & WALES
The HUFANGALUPE is a natural arch formed from Limestone much like the Green Bridge of Wales.
The stunning natural bridge is one of Mother Nature's wonders & watching the waves crash below whilst the mist from the ocean sprays up at you makes this natural bridge one of the top sights in Tonga.
Located on the mainland of Tongatapu, another almost identical bridge can be found on the island of Eua.
TONGA & AUSTRALIA
The MAPU 'A VAEA BLOWHOLES is a highlight of any trip to Tonga and you can sit for hours watching Mother Nature show off in all her glory.
The Kiama Blowhole in Australia is spectacular but come to Tonga and you'll find not one blowhole, but hundreds of them along a 5km stretch of windswept coastline.
The blow holes are located on the mainland of Tongatapu.
TONGA & THAILAND
Khao Phing Kan or JAMES BOND ISLAND is a famous sight in Thailand. Tonga has its very own famous rock called the TSUNAMI ROCK. The reason for the name is it is believed the giant boulder was thrown inland thousands of years ago in a huge Tsunami. You can even try your hand at climbing up to the top of the rock and taking in the stunning view of mainland Tongatapu.
TONGA & TAHITI
Like TAHITI the islands that make up VAVA'U are surrounded by crystal clear, warm & tropical, turquoise coloured waters. The islands have large lush green mountains which offer amazing lookouts. Kayaking, snorkelling & diving are just a few of the activities on offer. Made up of many islands you can stay on the mainland or make your way to a remote island resort.
TONGA & ECUADOR
You can travel to Ecuador to see the WILD HORSES OF COTOPAXI or you can make you way to Eua island in Tonga to see the WILD HORSES OF EUA. Like in Ecuador the horses have been introduced by Europeans, with some escapees finding freedom & to this day living wild, untamed & free.
TONGA & PAPA NEW GUINEA
KOKODA is one the most life-changing and gruelling hikes you can do. However, if that's too much to handle you can always head to Eua Island Tonga for some amazing hikes through the lush thick forest. The FANGATAVE BEACH HIKE takes you from the top of a huge cliff, down to the stunning remote & secluded Fangatave beach. It is only a 1-day hike but takes you through a series of caverns as well as hiking through the forest and climbing down rock faces. Like Kokoda it's not for the faint of heart!
TONGA & FIJI
FIJI is a great flop & drop destination but that still offers activities & FAFA ISLAND TONGA is a great little gem that offers amazing beachfront fales on a small island located only 30 minutes from the mainland. Boasting a couple of highly sort after 2-bedroom fales, it's perfect for families that need extra room & want to try something different to Fiji. It's also a bonus that Christmas time is considered low season here!
TONGA & PHILLIPINES
BORACAY in the Phillipines tends to be a honeymoon hotspot but have you ever heard of the BEACHOUSE & CORAL COTTAGE in Vava'u Tonga? Well Kevin Mc'Cloud from the TV series escape to the wild said "Well, I've just died and gone to heaven" when he made his visit to this stunning paradise. They have all the usual resort offerings like Kayaking, snorkelling & diving but just without the crowds & schedules.
TONGA & MALDIVES
The MALDIVES seems to be everyones dream destination but in Tonga we have our own little Maldives located on HA'APAI ISLAND. I can't offer you an overwater villa here, but I can offer you the ultimate beachfront villas at the Sandy Beach Resort or its cheaper cooler sister resort Matafonua lodge. Located on a gorgeous stretch of beach that is simply second to none, the snorkelling right off the beach is amazing with loads of colourful coral to view.
TONGA & JAMAICA
We know JAMAICA is cool but so is PANGAIMOTU ISLAND in Tonga. Local Big Mama is the owner, she runs a tight ship, which she sunk out the front so we could have fun jumping off it! An awesome day trip from the mainland of Tongatapu as its just a short boat ride until you are in the bar in your bare feet, toes in the sand, knocking back a few drinks & enjoying the island fun.
TONGA & VIETNAM
SON DOONG may be the biggest cave in the world but Eua island might have the most! There are thousands of EUA ISLAND CAVES & most are yet to be explored. You see the whole island use to be under the sea & was raised up by the Tongan Trench, so every cave is a wonder of fossils showing ancient marine-life history.
TONGA & USA
Lastly everyone loves a LUAU in Hawaii, but remember Tonga also offers feast & fire dancing at the OHOLEI DINNER SHOW. Dinner is a brilliant buffet of local taste sensation, enjoyed in the sand floor restaurant, located right on the beach. After dinner you head into the ancient Hina Cave to watch a brilliant fire dance show! Being inside an ancient cave just makes it so much more special! Located on the mainland of Tongatapu.
