GOOD QUESTION but difficult answer, as all of the different island groups offer something different & unique!
Here is my brief overview of all the amazing options (that I have personally experienced)
Remember Tonga is made is up of over 170 islands but here are the 4 main ones YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

TONGATAPU ISLAND


Let me share some information about Tongatapu island that might be helpful for travelers. As the largest and most accessible island, Tongatapu is an excellent starting point for exploring Tonga. You'll find plenty of island resorts and attractions on the mainland, including the breathtaking cave pool, the ancient Ha'amonga, and the stunning blowholes and natural bridge, to name just a few. And if you happen to visit between July and October, you can even swim with humpback whales! Tongatapu island truly offers something for everyone on a Tongan adventure. Tongatapu island is sometimes overlooked by travelers who view it as just a stopover on their way to the outer islands of Tonga. However, this island has a lot to offer visitors who take the time to explore it.  By spending a few days or even a week on Tongatapu, travelers can truly immerse themselves in the local culture and experience the beauty of this fascinating island.

HOW TO GET HERE

Flight from Sydney: Qantas offers direct flights to Tongatapu and back on Saturdays, with the addition of a Wednesday flight between  21Jun23 to 25Oct23,

Flight from Auckland: Air New Zealand fly direct to Tongatapu & back Mon-Sat, Flight from Sydney connect on Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday.

Flight from Fiji: Fiji airways fly direct from Nadi daily except Wednesday & Sunday & return Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday.

WHERE TO STAY

AIRPORT HOTEL: For those with inconvenient flight times, the airport hotel is a great choice as it's just a 5-minute drive away from the airport.


BEACH HOTELS: If you're looking for a beach hotel, there are plenty of options available. Keep in mind that you'll need a car or a driver to get around, but this can easily be arranged. These hotels are approximately a 30-minute drive from town. It's important to note that many of the beach and island resorts in Tonga have yet to recover or rebuild since the 2020 tsunami.


ISLAND RESORTS: Island resorts are another excellent option as they offer a remote feel and great value for money. They're easily accessible by a short boat ride from the mainland. HOTELS IN TOWN: Hotels in town are perfect if you want to be within walking distance of the markets, restaurants, and other attractions. They're also located close to the Wharf for day trips out to the islands, but the water may not be suitable for swimming as it's more like a harbour.

EUA ISLAND


Eua Island, located a 2-hour ferry ride away from Tongatapu, is an adventure seeker's paradise. This unique island stands out from the rest of Tonga due to its 40 million-year-old age and thick, dense forest. It offers unparalleled hiking experiences that cannot be found anywhere else in Tonga.


Although the accommodation options are basic, the island provides an authentic and rustic experience that allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the island's natural beauty. Moreover, visitors can swim with whales here between June and October, which is a rare and exhilarating experience.


In summary, Eua Island is a must-visit destination for those looking for a unique adventure and natural experience in Tonga.

HOW TO GET HERE

Flight from Tongatapu: Lulutai Tonga provides domestic flights from Tongatapu to Eua every day from Monday to Saturday. Interestingly, this flight is considered the shortest in the world, with a duration of only 7 minutes!

Tongatapu to Eua: MV 'Onemato   Departs MON, WED, THUR, FRI at 10:00am, SAT at 11:00amTongatapu to Eua: MV 'AlaimoanaDeparts WED & SAT at 11:00am


Ferry back to Tongatapu

Eua to Tongatapu: MV 'OnematoDeparts MON, WED, THUR, FRI at 3:00pm, SAT at 3:30pm 

This ferry is meant to come back the same daybut usually stays overnight in 'Eua without notice! 

Eua to Tongatapu: MV 'AlaimoanaDeparts THU & MON at 5:00am

Ha'apai Island is a group of islands located in the central part of Tonga. It is a serene and peaceful destination with pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and incredible marine life. Ha'apai Island is home to numerous uninhabited islands, where visitors can enjoy secluded beaches and explore the natural beauty of the area.


The island also offers world-class snorkeling and diving opportunities. Divers can explore the Hot Spring Cavern and Arch of Ofalanga, which are two of the most popular diving spots in the area.

Ha'apai Island is also known for its whale encounters. Visitors can witness the majestic humpback whales that migrate to the waters around the island between July and October.

VAVA'U ISLAND


Va Va Voom Vava'u! Vava'u is a remote island group located in the northern part of Tonga. The island group consists of over 50 islands and is known for its crystal-clear waters, colorful coral reefs, and diverse marine life. Vava'u offers some of the best snorkeling and diving opportunities in the world, with over 100 species of tropical fish, giant clams, manta rays, and sea turtles.


The island group is also famous for its abundance of humpback whales, which can be seen between the months of July and October.

Flight from Tongatapu: Lulutai Tonga fly direct from Tongatapu to Vava'u and the flight takes approx. 1hour.They have a few flights a day from Monday to Saturday.


Flight from Ha'apai: Lulutai Tonga fly direct from Ha'apai to Vava'u on Tuesdays.


Ferry from Tongatapu
