📘 'Eua Sea Transport on Facebook

⚠️ Honesty first: these are the standard patterns - the real week's timetable is posted on Facebook and can change with weather, charters, technical problems or special trips. The return ferry sometimes stays overnight in 'Eua without notice, so never book the ferry the day before an international flight - leave a buffer day.

🔍 How to read the ferry timetables

Each week's timetable is posted as a photo on the operators' Facebook pages, often in Tongan - and each company lays theirs out differently. Here's both boards, decoded.

Board 1: 'Eua Sea Transport (MV 'Onemato)

The headings & days

Vaka = vessel Aho = day / date Mavahe = departs Tau = arrives Taimi = time NUK = Nuku'alofa · EUA = 'Eua Monite = Mon Tusite = Tue Pulelulu = Wed Tu'apulelulu = Thu Falaite = Fri Tokonaki = Sat Sapate = Sun

The phrases between the rows

  • 🚢 "Tau pe ki 'Eua fakahifo fakaheka pea foki mai" - arrives at 'Eua, unloads & loads, then returns to Nuku'alofa
  • 🚢 "Tau pe ki 'Eua 'o fakahifo" - arrives at 'Eua to unload only
  • 📦 "Hala vaka tanaki uta" - no trip, cargo collection day
  • ⛪ "Sapate aipe 'i 'Eua" - spends the weekend at 'Eua
  • ⚠️ "Fanongonongo" (the notice): the timetable can change for Fakamatala'ea (weather), Vaka no (chartered), Palopalema fakatekinikale (technical problems) or Folau makehe (a special trip)
MV 'Onemato weekly ferry timetable between Nuku'alofa and 'Eua, from the 'Eua Sea Transport Facebook page

An 'Onemato weekly board. Read each row left to right: day - departs (Mavahe) - time - arrives (Tau) - time. Pink rows are the no-trip cargo days.

Board 2: Tofa Ramsay (MV Vaomapa)

The headings

# of voyage = the trip number for that week Uafu = port Taimi Fakafuofua Tu'uta = estimated ARRIVAL time Taimi Fakafuofua Mavahe = estimated DEPARTURE time NUK = Nuku'alofa · EUA = 'Eua Cargo Collection = freight window, not a sailing

How to follow a voyage

  • 1️⃣ Each block is one return voyage - read the DEPARTURE side (right) first, then the ARRIVAL side (left)
  • 2️⃣ Example: departs NUK Monday 12:00pm, arrives EUA Monday 3:00pm
  • 3️⃣ Then departs EUA Tuesday 5:00am, arrives NUK Tuesday 8:00am
  • 🔴 The EUA rows are printed in red - handy for spotting your island at a glance
  • 📦 The red Cargo Collection line is for freight customers, not passengers

A Vaomapa weekly board, laid out by voyage number. Right half = departures, left half = arrivals.
